THE FIFTH

In THE FIFTH Stasys Šimkus competition which took place on the 16th of May, 1981, 22 choirs from Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Panevėžys and Alytus took part. They competed in three groups. The laureates of the first group were the female choir of the Vilnius Construction Company “Eglė” (leader Jonas Kavaliauskas), the male choir of the Ministry of Internal Affairs “Sakalas” (leader Leonidas Abaris), the mixed choir of the Academy of Sciences (leader Vytautas Četkauskas), and the mixed choir of Kretinga Municipal Cooperative Society “Gintaras” (leader Gediminas Purlys). The prize for the best performance of a S. Šimkus’ song was granted to the choir “Gintaras” from Kretinga; the prize for the best performance of a contemporary composer was granted to the mixed choir of the Šiauliai Teachers’ House “Varsa” (leader Jonas Kievišas). The laureates of the second and third groups were the female choir of Klaipėda “Trinyčiai” Cotton producers (leader Remigijus Songaila), the male choir of Vilnius City “Vilma” (leader Adolfas Krogertas), the mixed choir of Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (leader Algimantas Mišeikis), the choir of Klaipėda Secondary School No. 14 (leader A. Arlauskas), the mixed youth choir of Vilnius Secondary School No. 21 (leader Jonas Kizelis) and Kaunas Secondary School No. 13 (leader P. Kedainis). The choir “Vilma” received the prize for the best performance of a S. Šimkus’ song, and the mixed choir of Kaunas Polytechnic Institute was granted the prize for the best performance of a contemporary composer’s song.
