THE FIFTH

The fifth Stasys Šimkus Choir Competition took place on May 16–17, 1981, and brought together 22 choirs from the cities of Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Panevėžys, and Alytus.

In the first group, the laureates were: the women’s choir Eglė of the Vilnius Builders’ Palace of Culture (conductor Jonas Kavaliauskas), the men’s choir Sakalas of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (conductor Leonidas Abaris), the mixed choir of the Academy of Sciences (conductor Vytautas Četkauskas), and the mixed choir Gintaras of the Kretinga District Cooperative Union (conductor Gediminas Purlys). The prize for the best performance of a Stasys Šimkus song was awarded to the Gintaras choir of Kretinga, while the prize for the best performance of a song by a contemporary composer went to the mixed choir Varsa of the Šiauliai Teachers’ House (conductor Jonas Kievišas).

In the second and third groups, the laureates were: the women’s choir of the Klaipėda Trinyčiai Cotton Manufacturing Association (conductor Remigijus Songaila), the Vilnius city men’s choir Vilma (conductor Adolfas Krogertas), the mixed choir of Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (conductor Algimantas Mišeikis), and the youth mixed choirs of Klaipėda Secondary School No. 14 (conductor A. Arlauskas), Vilnius Secondary School No. 21 (conductor Jonas Kizelis), and Kaunas Secondary School No. 13 (conductor P. Kedainis). The prize for the best performance of a Stasys Šimkus song was awarded to the choir Vilma, while the prize for the best performance of a contemporary composer’s song went to the mixed choir of graduates of Kaunas Polytechnic Institute.
