THE SEVENTH

The Stasys Šimkus Choir Competition, held on April 25–26, 1987, was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birth. It brought together 27 choirs from Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Panevėžys, Marijampolė, and Alytus.

In the first group, laureate titles were awarded to the mixed choir Gilija of the Klaipėda Teachers’ House (conductor Remigijus Songaila), the women’s choir Eglė of the Vilnius Builders’ Palace of Culture (conductor Jonas Kavaliauskas), the men’s choir Vilma from Vilnius (conductor Tadas Šumskas), and the mixed choir of the Vilnius Teachers’ House (conductor Laurynas Vakaris Lopas). The special prize for the best performance of a Stasys Šimkus song was awarded to the mixed choir of the Vilnius J. Tallat-Kelpša Higher Music School (conductor Juozas Talžūnas), while the special prize for the best performance of a contemporary composer’s song went to the mixed choir of the Vilnius Teachers’ House (conductor Laurynas Vakaris Lopas).

In the second, third, and fourth groups, first places were won by the mixed choir of Marijampolė State Institutions Employees (conductor Juozas Jonikas), the women’s choir of the Klaipėda Trade Administration (conductor Vydmantas Ruzgys), the men’s choir of the Klaipėda Housing Construction Combine (conductors Vytautas Pečiulis and Alfonsas Vildžiūnas), and the mixed choir of Vilnius Secondary School No. 21 (conductor Jonas Kizelis). First places were shared by the mixed choirs of the Klaipėda Stasys Šimkus Higher Music School and the Vilnius Juozas Tallat-Kelpša Higher Music School (conductors Audronė Purlienė and Juozas Talžūnas).
