THE EIGHTH

The Stasys Šimkus Choir Competition took place on November 11–12, 1989, in the hall of the Klaipėda Conservatory. It featured 16 choirs from Tallinn, Vilnius, Kaunas, Alytus, Marijampolė, Telšiai, and Klaipėda. The ensembles competed in three groups: mixed choirs (8 ensembles), men’s choirs (4 ensembles), and women’s choirs (3 ensembles).

Laureate titles of the 8th Stasys Šimkus Choir Competition were awarded to the mixed choir Gilija of Klaipėda (conductor Remigijus Songaila), the Kaunas Chamber Women’s Choir (conductor J. Masevičius), and the Vilnius Men’s Choir Vytis (conductor Tadas Šumskas). For the best performances of Stasys Šimkus songs, special prizes of the Stasys Šimkus Higher Music School were awarded to the mixed choir of the Kaunas Šilelis House of Culture (conductor E. Kaniauskas) and the Kaunas Chamber Girls’ Choir (conductor Viktoras Masevičius).

Prizes for the best performances of contemporary works were awarded to the Kaunas mixed choir Leliumai (conductor Albinas Petrauskas) and the Kaunas Chamber Girls’ Choir. Both of these choirs also received prizes for the best overall competition programs. By special decision of the jury, a diploma was awarded to the mixed youth choir from Tallinn.
