The choir was established in 1990; since 2000, the choir has been conducted by Arturas Dambrauskas. Currently, it is one of the most outstanding and promising choirs in Lithuania: in 2006, 2013 and 2017 the choir was ranked the highest Ist category in the Lithuanian competition of adult choirs.
The choir has gained the international acknowledgement by participating in and winning different prestigious contests and festivals (Belorussia, Latvia, Macedonia, Austria, Italy, Germany, Poland, etc.). Special popularity was attained by “Cantare” in 2009, as it became the laureate of the contest “Lietuvos balsai” (Lithuanian Voices, 2nd place), organized by the Lithuanian National Television. In 2010, the choir won the first prize in the international choir competition in Macedonia. In 2011, the choir was awarded the International Brilliance Star diploma by the State Centre of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania for its international achievements up to this year. In 2012, proving that name, “Cantare“ won the 3rd place in a prestigious Torrevieja (Spain) competition of Habaneras and Polyphonies. In 2013, “Cantare” was again ranked the Ist category in the Lithuanian competition of adult choirs. In 2016, “Cantare” celebrated a successful end of the season by winning the First degree Diploma at Stasys Šimkus International Choir Contest (Klaipėda, Lithuania), and 2nd place at Laurea Mundi Choir Contest (Budapest, Hungary). In 2017, the choir won the golden diploma in the International choir contest Musica Eterna Roma (Italy), and in the end of the year was ranked Ist category in the contest of Lithuanian choirs, and got a special prize for the best performance of the song composed by a Lithuanian composer.
The repertoire on the choir concerts and projects is diverse and colourful, ranging from sacred music to folk, modern and unique electronic pieces. “Cantare” is the choir actively participating in Lithuanian and International events and projects. The singers of the choir are people representing different generations, and professions. Although the majority of the choir members are amateur musicians, it is not an obstacle to perform professional and complex music compositions.
