THE FOURTH

The fourth Stasys Šimkus Choir Competition took place on May 12–13, 1979, and featured 15 choirs from the cities of Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Panevėžys, and Kapsukas (now Marijampolė). The choirs competed in two categories.

In the first category, the laureates were: the girls’ choir of the Vilnius Trade Technical School (conductor D. Kundrotienė), the men’s choir of the Šiauliai Television Factory (conductor Romanas Andriuškevičius), and the mixed choir of the Klaipėda Teachers’ House (conductor Gediminas Purlys). The prize of the Stasys Šimkus Higher Music School for the best performance of a Stasys Šimkus song—Atsisveikinimas su giria (“Farewell to the Forest”)—was awarded to the mixed choir of the Kapsukas Food Industry Vending Machine Factory (conductor R. Povilionis). The prize for the best performance of a piece from the repertoire of the 1980 National Song Festival was awarded to the mixed choir of the Klaipėda Teachers’ House for K. Prosnakas’s Jūra (“The Sea”), conducted by Gediminas Purlys.

In the second category, the laureate among women’s choirs was the women’s folk choir Aidas of the Lithuanian Ministry of Light Industry (conductor Juozas Vanagas), and among mixed choirs—the mixed choir Banga of the Kaunas Radio Factory (conductor Zita Abromaitytė). The Stasys Šimkus Higher Music School prize for the best performance of a Stasys Šimkus song was awarded to the women’s choir Aidas for the Lithuanian folk song Ūžia girelė (“The Little Forest Rustles”), harmonized by Stasys Šimkus. The prize for the best performance of a work from the repertoire of the 1980 National Song Festival went to the women’s choir Volungė of the Panevėžys Trade Administration for the harmonized Lithuanian folk song Ant ežerėlio rymojau (“I Lingered by the Little Lake”), conducted by Gražina Viržonienė and V. Paltanavičius.

For the participants and guests of the Stasys Šimkus Choir Competition, concerts were given by the children’s, girls’, and mixed choirs of the Klaipėda Stasys Šimkus Higher Music School (conductors Nelė Gricienė, N. Domarkienė, and Remigijus Songaila), as well as by the mixed choir of the Klaipėda Faculty of Music Teachers of the State Conservatory (conductor Vytautas Pučinskas).
